LONG HAIRED (LONG COAT) GERMAN SHEPHERDS SHED A LOT OF HAIR!

Many people ask if (long coat) long haired German Shepherds shed a lot, and the answer is a definate YES! Long haired (long coat) German Shepherds shed every day of the year!

People also ask if long haired (long coat) German Shepherds shed more than stock coat German Shepherds, and the answer is they shed the same amount of hair, but their is just more of it! The hair is longer, so it creates more mass even though both shed the same amount equally.

A good example of the extreme amount of hair that German Shepherds shed is demonstrated in the video below of a stock coat German Shepherd being groomed. Long haired (long coat) and stock coat German Shepherds shed massive amounts of hair, but it is worse when they blow their coats in the spring and fall.

I have had twice this amount of hair come off during a (long coat) long haired German Shepherd grooming session when the dog is blowing (massive shedding) its coat in the spring and fall. Long haired (long coat) German Shepherds shed daily, but have extreme undercoat fur blow outs in the spring and fall.

Therefore it is highly recommended long haired (long coat) and standard German Shepherds be brushed outside due to the extreme amount of hair that comes off during a brushing session.

This dog looks like it is blowing its coat, which occurs twice a year. Normal daily brushing does not produce this much hair shedding.

I love the part where the fur flies through the air during the grooming process…LOL

Grooming a Long Coat Dog.

The dog being groomed in the video is not a long haired (Long Coat) German Shepherd. It is a Belgian Tervuren but the coat is the same as a double coated long haired (long coat) German Shepherd, therefore it is interesting to watch her grooming process…once more the fur flies during the grooming!

Here is a dog grooming hair dryer that you might want to check out for a long coat (long haired) German Shepherd to help with the grooming process.

RECOMMENDED BRUSHES to USE ON A LONG HAIRED GERMAN SHEPHERD

Many of the videos on YouTube about long haired (long coat) German Shepherd shedding show a brush named the Furminator being used to shed them. If I understand correctly, this brush actually cuts the fur in addition to brushing it. Therefore I do not recommend this brush for long haired (long coat) German Shepherds because it will destroy the beautiful coat due to the cutting action of the blade.

Below I’ve listed the brushes that I like to use.

HORSE MANE AND TAIL RAKE BRUSH

The reason that I like using this type of brush to begin the brushing session on my long haired German Shepherd is that it reaches all the way down to the skin and through the undercoat. It is one of my favorite brushes to use when the long coat German Shepherds are blowing their coats in the spring and fall. If the ends of the prongs are sharp you might want to dull them with a file, and just take it slow during the brushing session.

Remember not to  pull out knots in the long hair. Begin at the bottom of the knot and slowly work your way gently up with each additional brush stroke. Never try to use brute force to pull a knot out because your dog will not appreciate that.

DOG 2-in-1 COMBO BRUSH

This is the other brush that I use after finishing with the rake. I use the metal round tip pin side to go over the long haired German Shepherd, being gentle around the face, legs, stomach, tail and rear.

I like to brush going against the direction that the long coat hair grows. Once I’ve removed most of the lose long hair, then I take the bristle side and brush against the grain of the long hair to tease the fur around the face, legs, stomach, rear and tail to make the dog nice and fluffy.

Once the brushing has been completed it is time to go on some photo shoots (after I clean the nose if it is dirty…LOL).

Long coat German Shepherds are magnificent with their glorious coats, and I feel they are worth the extra grooming effort in order to have such a beautiful creature.

Therefore…if you brush daily, and use one of the robot pet vacuum’s shown below for your home, it should greatly reduce the amount of lose hair flying around in the home, and make the experience of owning a long haired German Shepherd more pleasurable.

So check out the wonderful robot vacuums below that are designed to sweep up pet hair and dander.
